We chose to do a fade-out ending on the song we're currently mixing for the forthcoming Jefferson Thomas album. I've noticed that no pop songs fade out anymore. I got curious as to why, and I found this article. It spends a lot of time on the history of the fade-out in pop music, but it eventually arrives at the conclusion that the demise of the fade-out can only be attributed to what has - sadly - compromised everything else in pop culture; the ever-dwindling attention span. Just as you can't really let a song take the time to develop the way you used to, now you supposedly can't even fade it out anymore...?! The fade out has...faded out!
Well, screw it - we're sticking with the fade on this mix. And yes, all you film and TV Music Supervisors will scream "GIVE US A COLD ENDING!" - so, we'll cook up an alternate non-fade mix just for you.
