On his new release, SIXTEEN SUNDAYS, Jefferson Thomas just wants to have fun.  2017’s Play Hurt  was crafted in the midst of catastrophic personal and family matters, and strayed into occasional moody reflection and a few dark corners.  This time, he was having none of that.  “This one is fun, fast-moving, and celebratory," explains Thomas.  "I said, ‘No ballads or downers. We got past all that shit, let’s party!’  And no more fourteen-song ocean liners.  Let’s just make a quick, well-built canoe, and be done with it.  Something I can stand to listen to again within a week.”

It opens up with Greyhound Bus, an ode to childhood friends who didn’t fare so well, the soaring a cappella vocal harmony intro announcing that Thomas’ unapologetically rootsy approach to rock is front-and-center again.  All kinds of ghosts from the classic American musical landscape show up here.  Thomas takes his trademark retro-guitar attack and then raises the stakes with a smattering of vintage keyboards to match (Wurlitzer, CP-70 electric grand, Fender Rhodes and even an old upright tack piano), weaving an intriguing old-is-new-again patchwork of alt-country, retro soul, and rock that you could swear you’ve heard somewhere before.

"I listen mostly to new people making new music, and there's a lot of great stuff out there.  I also love to listen to old music; retro R&B and soul, vintage country, classic rock, whatever," Thomas muses, "but I don't just want to parrot that stuff.  I'm not a fan of the whole tribute-band thing; I think it's well-intentioned, but lazy.  I love old things, but I want to use them to make new music.  The best way to pay tribute to what came before is to take those great old sounds, drop them into something new and completely out-of-context, and move foward."

The album moves quickly into southern swamp (Hill People) and New Orleans romp (The Switch), the former pairing rmetal resonator slide guitar with a greasy funk/rock riff that would have made the Black Crowes proud, the latter featuring a closing brass section jam straight out of Mardi Gras.

Things ease seamlessly toward vintage soul with Son’s Gonna Rise Over Tom’s Diner, a fun, funky mashup of the Citizen Cope and Susanna Vega classics and Forty-Five, a satirical chuckle at Trump hysteria, before finishing out with the title track - a minimalist, down-tempo, reflective closer featuring Philly-soul harmonies and searing blues-rock guitar somewhere between Prince and Hendrix.

SIXTEEN SUNDAYS is ten new tracks of modern, zero-body-fat songwriting (most of them never reach the three-minute mark) smartly flavored with the kinds of instruments that made the classics, well…classic.  At a brisk thirty-five minutes, you’ll wanna say, “That was a fun ride! Can we go again?”
